In the manual for Diamond II ("Mate in X moves" chapter),
they show two positions (mate in 4/mate in 6). Novag
claims that Diamond II solves those problems in less
than one minute (~45 sec.). I've tried to solve them
with a Legend III computer (Excalibur).
-For mate in 4 position, after 14-16 hours, Legend III
comes up with a solution of 6 moves (though it's set
for "mate in 4" level).
-For mate in 6 position, after 18 hours, it cannot find
a solution. However, after one set of moves and another
18 hours, it finds a solution of 5 moves.
Is the Diamond's hash table the cause for this big
difference between their performance ? Could the
Legend III be defective ? (18 hours versus 45
seconds ?!!). Any ideas?
