Subject: Arasan at CCT6

Author: Jon Dart

a few notes on Arasan's games:

In Round 1, Arasan had White against Butcher. Arasan opened
with 1. Nf3, and was out of book after 4 .. f5 (this is a bit
provocative; Arasan likely wouldn't play it). Starting around move
33, there was a series of exchanges, at the end of which
Arasan was down a pawn. Butcher won easily in the endgame. Arasan
has a pretty even score against Butcher on ICC, so this wasn't
entirely unexpected: but still, starting at -1 isn't fun.

Round 2, Arasan had Black against ban (Junior). Arasan chose the
Caro-Kann, was out of book at move 11, and was very soon afterwards
in trouble. Arasan was prevented from castling and Junior wiped
it out.

Round 3, White against Noonianchess. Noonian was worse out of the
opening, but not dramatically so. 20 .. b5 led to opening the
the c-file. Arasan doubled rooks on it and was able to post a
rook on the 7th. At this point:

[D] 1r6/2R1pk1p/p2p2p1/1q1Pbp2/8/1P3Q2/P2B1PPP/6K1 w - -

Arasan played g4, and White had a strong attack.

In Round 4, against Chepla, Arasan was out of book here:

[D] rnbq1rk1/ppp1bpp1/4pn1p/3p4/2PP3B/2N2N2/PP2PPPP/2RQKB1R b K -

and played 7 .. g5, which was a stinker, weakening the Kingside.
Arasan wound up with an extra piece, but it was useless: Chepla
had Arasan's Knight and Rook tied down to the first rank. Very
disappointing game for me, but good play by Chepla.

Round 5, against nullmover, Arasan had the White side of a Sicilian
Scheveningen, and played a very nice Kingside attack, culminating in
42. Bxh6:

[D] 2r4k/p1q1b1p1/1p1pbnPp/4p2P/4P3/P1N1BB2/1PPQ1R2/1K6 w - -

Round 6, against Alarm, Arasan had the Black side of an English
opening. It was ahead from the opening and won smoothly.

In Round 7, Arasan-Avernox, at this point:

[D] r1b1kb1r/3n1ppp/p1pp4/5p2/3BP3/q1N5/P1PQB1PP/1R3RK1 b kq -

Averno played 14 .. f4 and after 15. Qxf4 f6 Qf5 was in trouble.
Arasan expected 14 .. fxe4 Nxe4 and I think Black is ok then. Averno
resigned at move 18, possibly a bit early (Arasan's score was
+3.27 at that point).

Round 8, Arasan was paired with Rebel and wound up in a main-line
Najdorf (Winawer Poisoned Pawn), which is not a good choice against
a booked-up commercial prog! Rebel played 13. f5, which is book, but
seems a bit unusual (other moves are Bf3, Kb1). Arasan was out book and
responded h4, which looks strange (Chess Tiger has 13.. Nc5 in its book).
Arasan was in trouble just a few moves later and was soon wiped out.

Round 9, Arasan was Black against Amateur in a Nimzo-Indian Defense,
Rubinstein. Arasan looked like it was in trouble for a while. Amateur
had control of the b-file and a couple of connected center passers.
Amateur's score got up to about +2.0 at one point, but Arasan still
evaluated it as even. Finally Arasan got the upper hand in the
endgame: White's king was immobile, Black had better King position,
and Arasan picked off one a couple of pawns to wind up with its own
dangerous passers.

So Arasan ends with 5/9, which is close to where it's been for the
last few CCTs. It's better than a few years ago, but so is the
opposition.

Thanks to everyone who participated, to Volker, and to IM Schroer for
commentary.
