my girlfriend and i bought notebooks this christmas. i got an AMD 2400+ and she has a celeron2400mhz. the 2400+ XP-M only runs at 1800mhz but is maybe better for chess than the celeron. on this machine CSTal2.03 does arround 55.000 NPS in middlegame. i am playing a 40/120 game between shredder8 and CSTal2.03 in the moment. it's unbelievable how deep shredder8 computes. on the celeron s8 is doing arround 200 K NPS. In the moment CSTal is in a better position and has sacced a bishop on h6 - a standard move - looks like on of those classical: knowledge beats search games :-)) it's unbelievable that CSTal is still competitive. shredder8 is - as far as all testers say -the strongest program in the moment. we are in move 20. [Event "CSTal2.03 vs. Shredder8"] [Site "40/120, 2400 mhz"] [Date "2004.01.02"] [Round "1"] [White "CSTal2.03"] [Black "Shredder8"] [Result "*"] 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 Nc6 6. Bg5 e6 7. Qd2 a6 8. O-O-O h6 9. Be3 Be7 10. Be2 Bd7 11. Nxc6 Bxc6 12. f3 b5 13. a3 O-O 14. Kb1 Qc7 15. Bxh6 gxh6 16. Qxh6 Rfd8 17. Rd3 Nh7 18. f4 Bf8 19. Rg3+ Kh8 20. Qh5 * cstal did not expect 20...Rab8, it had f6 in pb. the score increases.... +2.42. s8 says -1.11 but it is only in search 14. 21.f5 came and s8 is in search 18 (search depth !) seems it makes heavy pruning or lazy evaluation or whatever to reach those depths. how can a program reach those depths and play that weak to maybe lose in such a primitive way ? 21...exf5 and s8 says -0.88 went through search 18. CSTal now says +3.10.
