Hi.

at first a big thanks to Volker Richey for the great organisation and IM Schroer
for his expert comments to the games.

This was so far the best computer chess tournament for BlackBishop (former named
Holmes) sofar.
I know that my engine is better on slower time controls, but the final result
with 5 wins, is more than expected.
I'm happy that all the work i have done in the last weeks, wasn't for nothing.

Here some notes to the games by me (a chess patzer ;-):
Round 1:
The first game was against Matador. He has surprised me a bit, because his
engine comes now about 3 plys deeper than last year at the IPCCC.
Well done Stefan, and congrats again for your big jump. BlackBishop has playd in
this game some bad moves like 22.Be6+?, 27.h4? or 39.Rc6 which leads finally in
a lose against Matador.
See you soon at the IPCCC Stefan, and i hope for a revanche ;)

Round 2:
In round 2, BB has had to play against Tao by Bas Hamstra (who likes to drink
whiskey sometimes ;-). I know this funny guy from a tournament in Leiden.
The game comes fast in a very closed position, which is not easy to play for
computers. Only the b line was open and controled by a white rook from Tao.

[d]1kr4r/pbq1np2/1p2pNp1/3pPnBp/P1pP1P2/2P2Q2/2P1B1PP/1R3RK1 w - - 0 25

Some moves later my engine has given up it's own king safety and starts a
counteroffensive. The score of my engine was more and more growing.
In the finally position, the pressure on the white king was to big, and Tao
resigns here.

[d] 2r5/k4p2/p3pNp1/3pPnBp/Q1pP1P1P/2Pbn3/6PK/1r1B4 b - - 0 43

This was for me the most interesting game by BlackBishop in this tournament.

Round 3:
In this round i got Amyan, where BB looks always bad in test games. Not sure
where the errors by BB had been in this game, but at least Amyan has promoted a
pawn and wins the game.

Round 4:
Next opponent was Rascal, never heard before, like several other new engines in
this tournament. After the opening, BB gots relativ fast a strong position.

[d]4rrk1/ppqb3p/2nbp1p1/3p4/3P1Bn1/1QRB1NPP/PP2NP2/5RK1 b - - 0 17

The score of BB was growing slightly, but constant, and leads at the end in a
resign by Rascal, which has had a bit problems with it's own king safety in this
game.

Round 5:
Opponent was Cheetah, also a very new engine. His author told me, that he has
started to code his engine in Java, just before one year. I was a bit surprised
by the good play of Cheetah.
During the game the scores from both engines are vacillating very often. The
game was very interesting, but here in Germany it was about 2:30am, so i was
very tired and fall in sleep :)
Later when i woke up, i saw that the game ended in a loss by time from Cheetah.
Perhaps he has to optimize his time management a bit because the final position
looks very drawish.
So a lucky full point for BB.

final position:
[d]3n4/p2P4/1p1k1N1P/6K1/P5N1/7r/8/8 b - - 0 106

At the end of the first day, BB has reached 3 of 5, which was more than expected
and i was more than happy :-)))

Round 6 (second day):
In this round i got Rebel, one of my favourites befor the tournament starts.
Rebel was running on a very fast machine (3 GHz), perhaps about twice as fast
than my old computer. But also if we would have been changed the hardware, i
think there was absolutely no chance for BB.
In the average Rebel comes about 1,5 to 2 plys deeper in this game, and has
positioned his pieces very well like the following, i think, the main key move
21. Nc5, which pins my bishop on c8 and my rook in the corner for nearby the
whole gmae.

[d]r1b3k1/p4p2/1npr1q1b/2N1p2p/4P1p1/4N3/PPQ1BPPP/2R2RK1 b - - 0 21

The game was a good lesson for me. It shows me, how important it is, to know
something about pinned pieces. So there is a lot to do in the future in my
engine.

Round 7:
Next opponent was Butcher, as far as i know the last polish champion. I'm not
sure, if there was a big mistake by Butcher in the first moves after out of
book, but later BB has had a strong passed pawn at the a line.
At this point it wasn't difficult for BB to win the game.

[d]4r1k1/3p1ppp/4r3/2p5/P3nR2/1P1B4/2P3PP/R6K b - a3 0 24

Round 8:
Next game was against the well known Comet by Uli Tuerke. I know his program
many years before i have startet to write my own chess program. And most
insiders are knowing that Comet becomes a lot stronger in longer time controls.
Comet has reached often good results in tournaments in the past.
I don't know where BB has made the biggest mistakes in the game, perhaps there
has been too much. A good game by the Comet and finally a well earned win.
Uli i'm very pleased to meet you and all the other chess programmers in a few
days in Paderborn again.

Round 9:
The last game was against Averno. As far as i know, José Carlos has rewritten
his engine from the scratch in the last year. So i didn't know how strong his
engine is now.
In the middle of the game, BB has reached a position with some well positioned
pieces, like the white bishop. It seems this was enough for the final win over
Averno.

[d]1r2b1k1/2r2npp/1p1ppq2/1P3p2/2PN4/4QBP1/4PP1P/2RR2K1 b - - 0 28

Finally i want to say, that i havn't prepared my opening book for the
tournament. It was just an automatic generated book out of a pgn file with GM
games. So i think, BB has had much luck with the openings.

The next tournament comes in a few days (11.2-15.2), the IPCCC in Paderborn, but
the average strength of participants is there a bit higher than the average
strength in the CCT6.
I'm very anxious, if my engine can again finish the IPCCC with 2 or 2,5 pts. out
of 7 rounds like last year, where i think i have had a bit luck.

Again thanks to Volker, IM Schroer and all the participants for this nice event.
It was a great tournament for me and my engine.

Andreas

PS: Sorry for my bad english, but i hope others can understand all.
