For case insensitive passwords, you are correct. Consider uppercase and lowercase (52 letters instead of 26). Most passwords are case sensitive (or should be). For a site that really wants people to have good passwords... 26 uppercase English letters 26 lowercase English letters 10 digits + 32 punctuation/misc. characters (quick count on this keyboard) ---- 94 characters 94^6 = 689,869,781,056 So I guess my math was off. That's only 689 billion. For more combinations you could even add in non-visible characters, like control-characters.
