As you and Bob have proved, it is possible to create strong programs with both approaches. My own approach resembles yours more than Bob's. In the latest versions of my engine, I don't have any open file bonus for rooks at all. I prefer to keep my code as general as possible, and I really don't like to identify the most important special cases and writing code to handle each of them. Tord
