Before you move a rook in over-the-board chess, you have to lift it off of the
board. : )

Also: Suppose you are White and you play a2-a4 [with a pawn : )] and then later
move the rook from a1 to a3. You subsequently move the rook, on the third rank,
to another file which still has your white pawn on it. That is an unusual way
to develop a rook, but it happens. I once played in an over-the-board
tournament game [Tusculoosa, AL, USA, 1994 or 1995] in which I developed both
rooks to the third rank, putting one on h3 and the other on g3. [I had pawns on
g2 and h2.] My opponent played erroneously, allowing me to sacrifice the h3 rook
on h7 followed by Qd1-h5+ which led to mate next move. His king was on h7 after
the rook sac.

Rook lifts can really make a difference!
