It seems to me that you could submit an academic paper to CG 2004, and attend
the conference to present your paper. If you're already there for the
conference (which is an academic endeavour -- so presumably it would be
acceptable to your employer?) then the incremental time to participate in the
tournament is small.

I suppose you've "been there, done that" many times before, so it may not appeal
to you. I have to say that I really enjoyed attending ACG-10 and, by extension,
the last WCCC, in Graz last November. I was hardly a special case: the U of
Alberta sent at least five professors, plus more graduate students than can be
counted on two hands. Therefore, it puzzles me that it's difficult for you to
make arrangements to attend.

Congratulations on Crafty's performance at CCT-6!

Dave
