Reminiscent of the Paradise program, but you're looking to play the whole game well. Using Lisp wouldn't work for me. An intelligent chess program (assuming I could program such a beasty), would undoubtedly be hugely deprived from the small amount of chess knowledge I could "pour" into it. :) I'm sure you'll be able to put a lot of chess knowledge into Symbolic.
