The clock frequency does not say anything about the performance for chess applications. So a Pentium 4 clocked with 3.4 GHz is actually slower than an AMD 64 3400+ which is only clocked with 2.2 GHz. To make a short suggestion: The Athlon XP, the AMD 64 and the Intel Pentium - M (Centrino) are all fine for chess, but avoid an Pentium 4 Mobile, because the latter is slower although it has the highest clock rate. regards Joachim
