The problem is that there are a LOT of ideas out there, and the great majority of them are way worse than what our current best ideas are (alpha-beta, and its variants). Even if you hit on an idea that is almost as good as alpha-beta, it won't cause much of a fuss, because it's still not as good as alpha-beta, and the idea wouldn't be able to overcome inertia unless it is actually better than alpha-beta at a minimum.
