One thing you may want to check out is SharpChess, written in C#.  You can check
out Albert's website at:

One thing you may want to consider is going with C# instead of VB.NET. In theory
they are very similar, and many cases there is only minor syntax differences.
But, if you're reading tutorials, it may be easier to understand and convert C++
if you're going forward with C#...
