Subject: Announcing moderator elections

Author: Amir Ban

Date: 02:56:15 12/06/98

The moderators, in consultation with our sponsors at ICD, decided to call on you
to elect a new panel of moderators for CCC.

The new panel will be elected for 6 months, starting January 1st, 1999, and
ending June 30th, 1999. There will be three moderators in the new panel.
The process will be like this: We will now start taking nominations for
moderators from you. You can nominate any CCC member by posting here, or by
sending email to ICD. Steve will be posting the list of nominees from time
to time, and at some point will ask the nominees to make their views on
moderation policy known, as happened last time, so that you can make an
informed decision. If a nominee does not wish to run, he should inform
Steve of this. Sometime during December, we will hold elections for
moderators by opinion poll.

We will continue to act as moderators until the new moderators start acting
January 1st. We have been doing this for seven months, and all three of us
wish to return to be ordinary CCC members now, and do not seek reelection.

Here's a brief job description for a CCC moderator:

The job of the moderator is to make sure that the CCC charter is observed
by CCC members, which briefly means that the discussion is civil and on
topic. The moderators have several sanctions available against members
who do not follow the charter, one of which is to delete posts from the
message board, and another to deny access to CCC for a period of time or
indefinitely. A moderator is elected as one of a trio of moderators. By default,
moderation actions are taken by majority vote, though the moderators may decide
for themselves in which circumstances to waive this and give individual members
power to act alone, and indeed are encouraged to set such working rules
immediately after being elected.

The Computer Chess Club has become one of the most important avenues of
communication for our field. We call on all of you to contribute to our
community by nominating and voting, and by standing for election if nominated.
