Here is what I do, and it works really fine:

* Install each OS so it will use the boot record from its own partition, NOT the
Master Boot Record (MBR) of the disk (XP will do that anyway, and you can
configure Linux to install GRUB in the first sector of its partition, not in the
MBR).

* Use RANISH PARTITION MANAGER to install a compact menu in the MBR. You can set
the default partition to boot and the number of seconds to wait for user input
before starting this default partition. You do not have to create a special
partition to store the boot menu program, because the compact boot manager of
RANISH PARTITION MANAGER fits in the 512 bytes of the MBR.

Now when you boot you can type the number of the partition to start the
corresponding OS, or do nothing and let the default OS start after the specified
delay.

You will not use GRUB anymore to select the OS you want to start. So there is no
need to tell GRUB what other OSes are installed. However you will still be able
to use GRUB to start the version of the kernel of your choice (assuming you have
installed several kernels).

If you have only one kernel, GRUB is not useful for you. Just edit
/etc/grub.conf and set the timeout to 0 so GRUB will start Linux without asking
you anything.

Do a Google search to find RANISH PARTITION MANAGER, it is a very useful tool.
