I've been playing Crafty for about a year now on the ICC.
Bob has done a great job with this freeware program. Recently
I was watching Heatstroke ( this crafty's handle) play an IM
rated 2500 ELO ( according to his finger notes) at 5 0 time
controls. The IM had good winning chances on the queenside but
failed to follow through under time constraints, when suddenly
heatstroke announced mate in 21 ( the game actually ended 17 moves later).
While it may be argued it was a simple forced mate from an average
players perspective(around 1800 standard on ICC) pretty impressive
demonstration of crafty's tactical/mate finding skills in a 5 0 game!
The critical error was 43.......kh6(better was kg6 down but not out)
