Subject: Intel Compiler 8.0 vs Intel Compiler 7.1

Hello All,

Just wanted to share some compiler-experience:

The Intel Compiler 7.1 produces 6% faster executable then MSVC .NET 2002
I was happy with this cheapo gain and could not wait to try Intel Compiler 8.0.

Intel 7.1 compiled for pentium1: time=122.89
Intel 7.1 compiled for pentiumpro with ext: time=123.77
Intel 7.1 compiled for pentium4: time=124.50
Intel 7.1 compiled for pentiumpro: time=126.47

Intel 8.0 compiled for pentium3 with generic extensions: time=127.61
Intel 8.0 compiled for pentium3 with specialized p3 ext: time=127.94
Intel 8.0 compiled for pentium3: time=128.72
Intel 8.0 compiled for pentium1: time=128.95
Intel 8.0 compiled for pentium4: time=130.00

So the Intel 8.0 output is slower

MSVC .NET 2002 for pentium pro: 130.94
MSVC .NET 2002 for pentium: 134.02

The MSVC .NET 2002 is even more slower.

Is the Intel Compiler 8.0 then the previous version or also for other processors
like P4, ATHLON, Opteron, etc. What experience did you have with this?

Here is my favourite compiler list (based on my P3):

Intel 7.1
Intel 8.0
MSVC 6.0 SP5 and MSVC 2002 (they are pretty close)
GCC

The size goes as follows (from biggest to smallest):

Intel 8.0
GCC
Intel 7.1
MSVC 6.0 SP5 and MSVC 2002 (they are pretty close)

Best regards,

Michel
