Hardware accelerated chess is an ancient idea, and it has worked well in every instance. Deep Blue is surely the most famous. I believe that Belle may have been the first. It's not as rosy as you imagine however. What happens to the $500 card in a few years? Nothing, of course. But in the meantime, PC speeds have been doubling every year.
