I think it would be especially important to keep a reserve time in x moves/y minutes. For instance, say you are down to 1 move to go and 1 minute left. So your program uses the 1 minute left, decides on a move and sends it off to the internet chess server. Of course it takes a few milliseconds to get to the chess server, so you might lose on time.
