Mark,
I did some tests on different CM5000 settings (including Komputer Korner and
Faber/Pilz) and came to a conclusion that the default settings are the best
settings, except for Selective Search and piece values.
An interesting set of piece values that Larry Kaufman recommended as "the most
accurate table possible" in '94 Winter CCR review is: P=1, N=3.3, B=3.5, R=5,
Q=9.6. I played a 6 game match between a personality with the above piece values
vs. the default CM settings, the result is 3.5 to 2.5 in favor of the Larry
Kaufman piece values. So, give this a try on your CM6000, you might come up with
similar results.
As for the Selective search setting, Larry Kaufman reported in '89 1st Qtr
CCR, that he's observation with then dedicated computers, is that at 40/2 or
slower time limits - ply 4 is best; and for 30'(action) or faster time limits -
ply 3 had a tiny edge. I played a 6 game match on my CM5000 between the default
6 ply and the 10 ply setting (same everything) and the 10 ply setting come out
slightly ahead (3.5 - 2.5). With today's faster hardware, I don't know (yet) how
ply 4 setting will compare with ply 6 setting and 10 ply setting at different
time limits. Thanks for sharing your observation with us.
