(b) adding random openings simply means that the number of games required becomes even larger. Play however you want of course, but speaking only for my program, giving it oddball openings is going to hurt it. Crafty isn't tuned for "hyper-modern" type openings, and it isn't going to play them particularly well. That's why I don't every have it choose those through the opening book. I'd bet other programs have similar "issues" and their authors handle it the same way, but just avoiding certain types of openings.
