By far the most mentioned excuse I've seen so far is (drum roll):
You played too few games.

Naturally, if the GUI is stealing resources the engine expects to use, or the
opening book is from some _other_ chess program - then I think the "excuse"
(like playing less than 30 games), is quite valid.
