I think too, that it is not required to know the particular version, not even the engine. Also, I assume that these quite strong players are familiar with chess programs, in general. Remember, Smirin won a game against Shredder in his computer match, which was nearly identical to another game which van Wely won against Fritz (!) in these Dutch Championships where Fritz participated. So, Smirin applied preparation which was "simply" anticomputer, not specific anti-shredder or anti-fritz. I see no reason not to accept that FIDE elo performance. The opponents were just as strong as they were against Shredder, and they just had their ratings they had. Again, J.Sonas has IIRC written something in the sense of, that these GMs were to weak (!) for Shredder to show it's whole potential... (I don't remember his exact wording, but it was in one of the statistics articles at chessbase.com). Regards, Mike Scheidl
