Kasparov uses Deep Junior to help develop new opening lines.

Many professional players use Fritz for that.

The best use of an engine for analysys is by analysing lines previously chosen
by yourself. If you don't do that, it'll waste time analysing all the possible
moves in a position. Some of these moves are really crap and sometimes an engine
will take more than a day to "see" that, i.e., in closed positions... but an
average player will just disconsider some moves "by heart"...

"Centaur" is the combination of human + engine. That makes the best use for
analysys.

Rebel has an interesting feature for this (analysys of some moves only,
excluding others). I think you can do that with most top engines too. I would
not recomend Shredder because of that known bug (only first move is really
reliable- I've seen it give away the queen at move #2 !). Deep Fritz or Deep
Junior on multiprocessor machines give great analysis. Also does Hiarcs (very
reliable).

So my best advice for you is to improve your positional knowledge and try to
analyse the positions using your engine, but don't just let it do all the job...
