I have noticed this also with Ruffian. I can always tell if Ruffian is going to
win a game or lose a game by how much time it has left relative to the opponent.
If Ruffian has a time advantage over the opponent, it's going to win. If Ruffian
is at a time disadvantage, it's going to lose. This holds most of the time. I
noticed the same thing when I watched Ruffian in CCT6.

I agree with your assessment. Ruffian sees something it doesn't like and it
scrambles to fix the problem by throwing more time at the search. Of course, if
the opponent is good enough to get an advantage over Ruffian, extra time isn't
going to help Ruffian that much usually, so that's why I see Ruffian at a time
disadvantage, and it almost always goes on to lose.
