This is for people with 2 computers running WIN 9X who end up with a
large >1.4Mb file on one computer and want to transfer it directly to
the other computer. They could have course have a laser servo 100 mb
floppy drive on both systems or use extra disk technologies like
Syjet or upload the file to the web and then download it to the other
computer. However few people have access to these ways and besides
they are indirect ways anyway and take much longer to transfer. There
is an easy way with WIN 9x and it is called Direct Cable Connection.
All you need is a null modem cable that costs less than $8 U.S. ( the
same one that you use to connect both computers together to play
computer vs computer matches). Connect the cable to the serial ports.
Turn on both machines. Go to the Network Neighborhood in both
computers and right click on Properties. In the Configuration tab,
make sure that you have the IPX/SPX compatible Protocol and the
NetBEUI protocol installed and the File and printer sharing for
Microsoft Networks. If the above 2 protocols and the File and printer
service are not installed, Take out your Windows CDROM and insert it
into your CDROM drive on both machines. Click on the Add button, and
Click on Service and then click on Microsoft and then File and Print
sharing. Click on Okay and the CDROM file will be added to youir
system. Then go back to the SELECT NETWORK COMPONENT screen again and
click on Protocol. You have to again click on Microsoft and then click
on IPX and click okay and that CDROM file will be added. Then repeat
the above procedure for the Netbeui protocol. All this never has to
be done again. Do the above for both systems. Go back to the Network
dialog box and click on the File and print sharing box and make sure
both boxes are checked in the File and Print Sharing dialog box. Now
go to the Identification tab and write down the Computer Name. You may
need it later. Go to the Access control tab and make sure that the
Share level access control box is checked. You will have to reboot
each system to make these changes viable. Now click okay and go to the
computer that has the large file that you want to move to the other
computer. Go to the folder and right mouse click it and click on
sharing. Go to the Sharing tab and click on Shared as. Give it a Share
name. Now you must run the Direct Cable Connection program on both
machines Start/Accessories/Direct Cable Connection and designate the
computer with the large file as the host and the other one as your
guest and choose your port usually COM 1. Once the handshake is
completed automatically, the guest machine may ask you for the host
computer's name. Fill it in and click okay . Then the host folder
should show up as a window on your guest machine. Drag this folder to
the My Computer icon. A new drive will be temporarily created. Click
on this new drive and drag and drop the file(s) to a folder on your
hard drive. Voila you are done. The file(s) will transfer.
