Online I would NEVER play ponder=off. Only eng v eng matches on a single PC do I use ponder=off. Since that's mostly what I play that's the main reason for leaving the default in winboard that way. Similar with autoplayed games ponder=ON always. Though it's very rare I autoplay using winboard. I have only autoplayed maybe a dozen or so games with Ruffian 2 versions and never noticed any difference relative to the other program and Ruffian's playing strength. And based on my current rating list all Ruffian games were ponder=off single PC. And my results relative, are within + - of the SSDF list. Sarah. Sarah.
