I think the idea is very good, but maybe has something to be adjusted.
My proposal:
16 participants (every sport has its qualifying games to reach the World
Championship, so if the number of willing players is bigger, some method to
determine the 16 players has to be decided).

First Phase (3 rounds)
----------------------
Participants are splitted in four groups A,B,C,D and play three rounds to
complete a single round robin for each group. Best 3 of each group advance to
next phase.

Second Phase (3 rounds, 6 so far)
----------------------
Survivors from group A and B are merged into group E, and the same happens for
groups C and D into group F. Each group of 6 players has 2 rounds already played
from previous round, so 3 rounds are necessary to complete the round robin. For
example a player coming from group A will face 1st, 2nd and 3rd from group B,
holding its score against other 2 opponents of Group A. Best 4 of each group
advance to quarter-final.

Quarter Final (2 rounds, 8 so far)
----------------------
Parings are the following: (winner after 2 games advances. In case of 1-1, the
best placed in its own group advances)
Q1: E1-F4
Q2: F2-E3
Q3: F1-E4
Q4: E2-F3

Semifinals (2 rounds, 10 so far)
----------------------
Parings are the following: (winner after 2 games advances. In case of 1-1, the
best placed in its own group advances)

Q1-Q2
Q3-Q4

Final (Single game with possibility of tie-breaks, 11 rounds total)
----------------------
Of course played between the winners of the semifinals.

The format I described is similar to the Volleyball World Championship and in my
opinion is one of the fairest and most spectacular ones. If more than 16 players
are to be included in the tournament, the solution is to enlarge A,B,C,D groups,
requiring one more round every 4 players added.
