These positions are from an old training game (starting from a midgame position), where I could draw against Fritz 4.01 using that motif. But I'm not sure if the cases are clear enough so to speak. Nevertheless I think, 45...Nxf4 may not be the only road to the draw, but the easiest from a human viewpoint. [D]8/5pk1/5pn1/7P/4BP2/4K2P/8/8 b - - 0 45 45...Nxf4 It's interesting to try some engines for White *after* 45...Nxf4 or even after 46.Kxf4. It seemed to me as if some start with a drawish score due to the blind bishop motif which they obviously recognised, but then seemed to "forget" about it during deeper calculation, IOW. started to show high white scores (or at least clearly higher than 0.00). Crafty 19.11 shows a stable draw score: Analysis by Crafty 19.11 (P3/700): 46.Kxf4 Kg8 47.Kf5 Kg7 48.h6+ Kh7 49.Bd5 Kg8 50.h7+ Kxh7 51.Kxf6 Kg8 52.Bxf7+ = (0.00) Depth: 1/5 00:00:00 = (0.01) Depth: 17/28 00:00:29 11792kN, tb=7084 Tricky was my previous move 44...h5, but since white isn't forced to capture I'm afraid it's not a good test position. It would require more analysis than I've done too see if it is Black's best try, or even a safe draw or the only move that draws. It's not clear enough (to me).
