STL is the only place where I can see underscores used. I agree with you. Underscores make it much easier to read. I use them. IMO readability of your code is more important than how fast you can type the code by saving a few keystrokes. I would prefer a long variable or function name with underscores over some short abbreviated name any day. I like to read my code, not decode my code :)
