First, you need to download and install Winboard or xboard (Winboard is for windows, xboard is for Unix. You can do so at http://www.tim-mann.org/xboard.html Then, you need to make your engine support the protocol at http://www.tim-mann.org/xboard/engine-intf.html . Essentially, Winboard/xboard will start your engine's exe and use the stdin and stdout to communicate with it. This will both allow you to not bother writing a graphical interface (you can always play it through winboard), and also interface to a number of online chess servers. It's not the most intuitive protocol in the world, IMHO, but it does save a LOT of work. Hope that helps. Let me know if anything's unclear. Andrew
