I just began letting my engine play automatically on FICS last night. What a
coincidence!

I use Arena and my engine only supports the xboard protocol. In Arena, click on
the icon that looks like a globe. This will open up a connection dialog box. In
this box you can type in your username password, etc. You also tell it which
server to connect to, and you'll have to be sure to check the "Computer Account"
box. Once all that is set, you can click 'connect' to continue. After you are in
there will be a message board type thing in the bottom right corner along with a
few buttons and a space where you can type in commands to be sent to the chess
server.

One of the buttons it gives you is labeled "Options", this will bring up a few
handy options including some especially for computer accounts. One of these is
"Autoaccept" which makes it so that your engine will automatically accept any
challenges offered to it. Before you begin playing, you will have to go to the
Engines menu and make sure that your engine is the only one open.

Autoaccept will accept any challenges offered to your program, I can't speak for
ICC, but on FICS you can automatically filter out challenges that have settings
you don't like. Of course you'd have to figure out how to do that.

I hope this has helped.

Michael
