Practise shows (according to some authors) that extreme outcomes are seen more than we would expect based on the ELO formula. This means that we should try to play only against people who are rated higher than we are ourselves, and try to avoid playing people who are rated many points below us. Regards, Geert p.s. There was a VERY GOOD website about ratings, www.chessmetrics.com, but I believe it hasn't been updated in a while.
