It's simply a matter of CPU efficiency. After the PIII, Intel went with a less efficient, but capable of higher clock speeds, design for the P4. AMD Athlons simply get more work done per clock cycle. You can read the tech specs till the cows come home, but try it yourself on several Athlon and P4 systems, and you'll know for sure, yourself. Precisely how much better the Athlon will be for your specific program, will vary with the program, and the system you test it on. Other factors being equal (and when is that ever gonna happen?), systems with faster FSB, lower memory latency, greater bandwidth, etc., will all be contributing factors to a better chess computer system. I should also mention though, that the Intel Centrino has been reported here by several CCC members as kicking butt, and should not be lumped in with the P4's poorer performance per clock cycle. dave
