best would be to support both ;-) UCI Pros: + can show detailed info during calculation + supports multiple PV's (but only few engines support it) + engine defines a set of configuration options that can be displayed in the GUI UCI Cons: - GUI has complete control over engine, even controls pondering - engine is not informed about the result of the game, which makes book learning difficult - engine can not resign, offer or accept draws. the GUI decides about resignation and draw, which is particularly stupid. WinBoard Cons: - no standards for configuration options. the user has to configure the engine with a set of cryptic commands) - it's harder for the GUI to parse PV info coming from the engine (UCI has a fixed standard for PV info) WinBoard Pros: + engine controls pondering. This is good from the engine's point of view, but the GUI must carefully track the current status of the engine.
