If I could only have one chess program on my computer (to do everything), it would be a tossup between CM6K and Fritz 5. Very close. CM6K has a more than adequate database, good analysis features, an extremely strong engine, and great customization ability. If I wasnt it's engine to go nuts on me, I can customize it to do so. If I want it to play defensively, I can make it do so. But the point is that it *doesn't have to be* my only program. No single program can be all things to all people. Fritz 5 had great database features and is very aggressive, but the interface is not very configurable. It doesn't behave well sometimes with other windows programs. Every program that you can find out there has strengths and weaknesses, and we simply don't have to choose. I use CM6K frequently. My students do, and several of my fellow masters do. It's not supposed to be all things to all people; it's supposed to play great chess for a great price. This it does well. Chris Dorr USCF Life Master
