If you like Phalanx, you are likely to like Gothmog as well. :-)

Here are a few of the strongest few engines for Linux, ordered in groups with
similar playing strength (my impressions, I have no ratings):

Group 1: Deep Sjeng, Ruffian
Group 2: Crafty, Pepito, Yace
Group 3: Amy, Fruit, Gothmog, Gromit, Phalanx
Group 4: Arasan, Beowulf, Butcher, Djinn, Gnuchess, OliThink

There are many more, most of which are probably a bit weaker than the ones
mentioned above. The ones I remember at the moment are DrunkenMaster, Faile,
Fortress, Gaviota, GreKo, Minimardi, MSCP and TSCP.

I am sure there are many others which I have forgotten, and also that I
underestimate several of the above engines. There are many which I have
never tested very thoroughly.

Of course, strength is not the only important thing. DrunkenMaster and
Fortress are among my favorite engines, even though they are not among
the strongest.
