By all means get Winboard, if only to use as an interface for playing Crafty, Comet, etc. It is a great program. But for a PGN reader, you might want to get ChessBase Light (www.chessbase.com). Database functions, and built in Fritz 4.01 analysis module. Also reads cbh format. It is simple to install, and you can download it in a two floppy disk version which makes it easy to hand around physically. Admittedly, it isn't any good at herd control.
