I believe, the defaults are only better on slow comps, 500 MHz or less, and/or very short time controls (if at all). There are so many results from *very many* test games, that there can't be any doubt that custom settings for King 3.23 (als for 3.12) are stronger in computerchess. For King, the defaults definetely are not best. Every experienced King user will acknowledge this. Btw. some important ratings lists (CSS, BfF, G.S., FRC) are at least using Sel.=12 unlike the defaults 9 (CM-GUI) or even 6 only (engine default). mfg. Michael
