I use the Mapi setting. It's good at fast and long time controls. It seems to be 50 elo better at least overall according to tests I've done. I think mapi does a better job for analysis too. What’s interesting is that you can get free engines now (ruffian 1.05, List 512) and plug them into arena (also free) and get excellent analysis. The main reason chessmaster is a good buy, is because of the nice personalities, the training stuff by josh waitzkin etc, and a fairly low price tag. I'm looking forward to buying the next release of Chessmaster. Delfi 4.4 has nice customization of lower level play and you can enter in the elo level you want it to play at as long as you are at least 1250 elo and not higher than 1700 elo. Of course, you can play it on 2300 elo as well. Training for chess is becoming plentiful on the internet for free as well. Just do a quick search on google for 'chess training' etc. I've also got to recommend buying books used on the net. You can pick up great books by pandolfini etc for under 10 dollars.
