Xboard is Winboard but running under UNIX. The protocol is exactly the same as Winboard. Xboard was before Winboard. So probably, even the term we all use "Winboard protocol" is really a misnomer. If anything, it should be the Xboard protocol. I believe the term that Tim Mann uses is just called "Chess Engine Communication Protocol" and really Xboard and Winboard are instances of this communications layer together with a GUI.
