Ouch, I think I may have said that (privately) some years ago.
The code however reveals that 2G-1 is the limit (signed 32 bit).

If some Windows version supports more then 2GB *and* if the CM GUI
picks it up correctly and allows 2GB TT, the engine will commit
suicide. But I know neither of these 2 conditions.

No checks whatsoever, except for that 2G. :-)

But the seasoned CC'er of course knows the importance of monitoring
free RAM, swapfile, disk light, and nodes/second. One trick I use
myself on occasion is to run a dummy analysis just before starting
a benchmark or a game. That forces all useless stuff (e.g. disk cache)
out of RAM, and allows the next run to start on a clean slate.
