Thre are many options. Best one in my opinion is using Scid + XBoard. Scid for
storing and analysing games + all other database stuff and XBoard for playing in
ICS or against computer or for computer vs. computer matches.

You can use also Java based GUI-s. Jin and Jose are both pretty good. Jose
supports now UCI engines, nice 3D pieces, overall looks very nice.

And then there is also eboard and knights. And many other less known and less
used used chess GUI-s.

Cant answer because i have not used emulators, i dont feel any need for
emulating windows apps. For me, native linux chess GUI-s are good enough.
