I completely understand how you feel. I have played on the internet for years, and I'm not great, but I'm decent. I tried playing at an OTB tournament once and I did horrible. I wasn't used to having to write my own moves down or hit the clock, and I felt like I had never played chess before. I couldn't "see" any tactics at all. The first game I lost to a fools mate to a player rated in the 800s. The next game I had an easy win, and I fell into a stalemate trap set by a 600 player. I managed to win one game because the guy hung his rook. The last game I hung my bishop and lost quickly. OTB is a very different experience when you are used to playing on the net looking at a 2D board. I could probably get used to playing OTB, but I haven't yet found the motivation to play consistently enough to endure and overcome the beating I'd take from 800 and 600 players who are used to setting their cheapo traps. Plus it is weird when the kid's dad is standing over his shoulder the entire game.
