I remembered reading about this in Monsoon's web site, and found the quote: "One objection people often have to using the 0x88 representation is all the wasted space. The unused part of the structure is represented as shaded squares in the table below. Monsoon packs piece-square table (PSQT) numbers into that space; I have also seen other programs use that space to store other positional information like side to move, en passant square index, etc. It's also a good place to keep an incremental attack table if your program does that."
