In my Engine I'm using the "shadow fields" for storing the black and white piece-lists, the side to move, abilities of castling, en-passant-field, number of black and white ranged attackers, amount of black and white material, ideas are to store searching informations like extensions and some other informations - I will see :-) Best Ralf
