There is a definite difference in my play OTB compared to a 2D pixelized board. But for me it is the opposite - my OTB is much better. 3D on the computer is just not quite the ticket for me. I really like the way 3D looks onscreen but it isn't as clear as 2D when I am trying to visualize moves. Its strange how a real-life 3D wooden board is easier for me to see moves on - that would almost seem to be a contradiction, but I guess nothing beats the real life experience. You are lucky you have somewhere to play some real people. I have a hard time trying to get a live person to play and so ultimately I go back to my PC. I have never played a live tournament style game and probably should practice writing down my moves in case I ever have the chance. I don't even own a chess clock. ...think I was waiting to see if I could improve my play first, or a good sale price. I can see how the whole tourney thing could be a little wierd at first, but it has to be somewhat exciting also. I think it would be just another aspect of chess that would improve as you pursue it more. I wouldn't even worry about ratings right away, but look at various ways to improve your play and eliminate your weaknesses on the board. Some players will write notes about their moves during the game for review later. If time allows I would.
