I hate to admit it, but I also had Leave() in LEAVE.C for several years.
Based on pure spelling ignorance. I'm not sure if it was more stupid or
less stupid than thinking of "to leave", but the latter at least involves
thinking. :-)

However, the plural of "leaf" is "leaves".
So I think we can safely blame the English language for the confusion.
And Heiner get's away with it, in this case at least.
