GnuChess is a strong program, so that's very difficult. But what works for me to improve the evaluationfunction, is to often play against your program yourself, and you'll notice lots of things to add and improve to your evaluationfunction every game. (Because then you are very much in the game yourself, and you know all that's going on in control and so, and then when your program moves, you'll think "hmm what a stupid move" very often..)
