They date back at least to the early 90s, IIRC.  I no longer remember the first
time I read about them, but it's a *really* long time ago.

You're right, it's possible that the Botvinnik-Markoff extension wasn't very
common back then.

I use mostly static tricks which have been out of fashion for more than 20
years.  :-)
