Martin, Good question - and one that I have pondered in the past. Here's my thoughts: Clearly with Null move the classic formula does not apply. I had thought that good current programs (Shredder) were actually searching trees smaller than the theoretical minimum due to forward pruning such as null move. I have also assumed that the difference between 90% move ordering and 95% is huge in terms of tree size. I did some experiments with my Othello program and certainly in the case of Othello move ordering is *very* important. But then Othello is a 100% positional game with hardly any tactics. I didn't use the move ordering statistic. Steve
